Conceived as an immense chariot soaring across the heavens, the Sun Temple at Konark stands as a testament to the aesthetic brilliance and engineering daring of 13th-century Kalinga craftsmen. Commissioned by King Narasimhadeva-I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty around 1250 CE, the monumental sanctuary is crowned with 24 elaborately carved stone wheels drawn by seven spirited galloping horses.

The Marvel of the Konark Sundials

Each of the 24 wheels measures nearly 10 feet in diameter and is a sophisticated astronomical chronometer. By observing the precise shadow cast by the central axle pin across the eight major and eight minor spokes, ancient astronomers could calculate local time accurately down to minutes.

The carved reliefs on the wheel medallions depict daily scenes of life, musical performances, court rituals, and diverse wildlife motifs, rendering the entire monument an encyclopedic library frozen in stone.

The Upgraded Heritage Corridor Experience

Visitors today can enjoy a pedestrian-friendly heritage plaza surrounding the monument:
